African Safari or Circus?
Recently, I was asked by a client to help them navigate the perils of booking their once-in-a-lifetime, dream journey, Safari experience to southern Africa. It wasn’t easy and thus, I learnt a great deal. And consequently, a lot of it was very shocking. The southern African Safari Market is a hedge maze of confusion. Hence, there seems to be no end of questionable service providers ready to cash in.
Know What You Want
Knowing what you want from your African Safari will help greatly. Do your research throughly. Even if you intend to book with a travel agent. Know the of types experiences you wish to have. Be certain of your locations and budget. Know your timeframe and logistics, because all of these are essential. Like the Apex Predator, questionable providers prey on those who are uncertain. You will be surprised by just how much fear is used as a tactic. How it will be used to up-sell you from that smaller camping spot, to that more expensive hotel, to avoid the deadly Malaria mosquitos.
Not all animals are equal here. It’s worthy to note that the devil is in the detail. This is especially relevant if you are going to book your own package. Even if you consult a travel agent, be wise. Travel Agents make hefty commissions on Safaris. Sometimes in the thousands of dollars. Yes, this is true! Therefore, they are often motivated to find the most commissionable deal. Subsequently, this may not be the best deal to meet your needs. Be cautious. Question everything presented to you. Always read the fine print. You don’t want to end up on-the-ground in Africa discovering that what you have is less than what you expected.
